Despite being a success, the invasion of Norway completely devastated the naval dream of Germany. The country would lose most of its heavy ships in a series of battles which decisively proved that Germany would never be able to fight the Royal Navy on equal footing.

In Germany's first and only major campaign, they were plagued with defeat at every step of the way and failed to achieve any notable long term successes in naval battles. The disproportionately high losses and public humiliation of the defeat would prove to the leadership that their limited resources were far better spent on U-boat construction and airpower.
