STORYLINE:
Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan, Archbishop of New York, on Sunday visited the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary compound at the Aida refugee camp in the West Bank.

Earlier in the day, Dolan also led a service in the territory as tensions rose not only in the West Bank but also between Iran and Israel.

Israel on Sunday hailed its air defenses in the face of an unprecedented attack by Iran, saying the systems thwarted 99% of the more than 300 drones and missiles launched toward its territory.

Meanwhile, six months of fighting in Gaza has pushed the besieged Palestinian enclave into a deepening humanitarian crisis, with more than 1 million people on the brink of starvation.

Israeli bombardments and ground offensives in Gaza have killed more than 33,600 Palestinians.

The war started on Oct. 7 when Hamas killed 1,200 Israelis in a surprise attack, mostly civilians.

Around 250 people were also taken hostage by Palestinian militants, some were released during a ceasefire last November.
