“You can’t lift people up by putting them down”—Trabian Shorters

Narratives can advance justice and equity, influence policy, support culture change, and illuminate new ways of thinking. That’s why changing the narrative and the way stories are told away from a deficit-frame to an asset-frame is so critical. Stories that focus on the strengths, resourcefulness, and resilience of communities can inspire hope, prompting challenging and urgent conversations. The power of storytelling that can change hearts and minds can also generate support for programs, policies, and practices that work toward a world where everyone can live their best lives.

In April, 2023, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation convened a health equity summit in St. Louis, where we invited attendees to share with us their thoughts on changing the narrative. This video is a compilation of just a few of the thoughts, ideas, and reactions expressed by participants on transforming the systems and policies that act as barriers to ensure everyone has a fair and just opportunity for health and wellbeing.

Comment below with the narratives that need to change to advance health equity.
