The 2020 Ford Escape gets a whole new look as the company aims to convince would-be sedan buyers to buy a compact crossover, instead.

Ford’s decision to cut sedans from its lineup is old news by now. But with the debut of the all-new 2020 Ford Escape, we finally have a hands-on opportunity with the car most experts believe will win over those would-be sedan shoppers.

Under the hood, Ford has employed a range of engines. There’s a new 3-cylinder, a turbocharged 4-cylinder, and a couple of hybrid setups. Our test model—a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder making 250 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque—returned 23 miles per gallon city, 31 highway, 26 combined. The most efficient Escape is the non-Sport hybrid, which returns 44/37/41.

The interior matches the sleeker design Ford’s built for the Escape’s exterior. There’s an 8-inch touchscreen available inside that runs Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but the available head-up display (HUD) uses a small plastic flip-up screen, rather than the more impressive windshield display.

The Escape also comes standard with Ford’s Co-Pilot360 suite of advanced safety features. Pricing starts at $24,885 and rises to the Titanium trim’s starting MSRP of $33,400. With options that price can increase to the $38,000 range.
