2020 BMW X5 M Competition (review)

The 2020 BMW X5 M Competition is what happens when bean counters want more SUV sales and enthusiasts will glorify anything with huge horsepower. Its interior is spacious and gracious, with room for up to five and space for all their stuff. An array of upscale and high-tech options also verifies that the 2020 X5 M is as sophisticated and luxurious as it is powerful.

What's New for 2020?

The all-new 2020 BMW X5 M represents the third generation of the Bavarian automaker's sportiest X5 SUV. It's more powerful than the outgoing X5 M, with 33 horsepower more in standard trim and 50 extra horsepower in the Competition model. The rest of the changes are more evolutionary than revolutionary. Still, its resculpted sheet metal, enhanced interior, and modernized technology help make the latest X5 M better than ever.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

A monster hides underneath the hood of every 2020 X5 M. It has two turbochargers that force feed air into a 4.4-liter V-8 engine that generates 600 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque. The further enhanced X5 M Competition pumps out another 17 ponies. Both Bimmers utilize an eight-speed automatic transmission and a variable all-wheel-drive system. A set of 21-inch wheels and adaptive dampers are standard equipment. However, those who want a staggered set of rollers with 22-inchers out back have that option, too. The bigger rear wheels are standard on the Competition version. Our recent drive of a Competition model impressed with sports car-like grip in the corners and eye-watering acceleration.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The interior of the X5 M is exquisitely appointed and outfitted with myriad desirable features. A 12.3-inch fully digital gauge cluster rests behind its leather-wrapped steering wheel that also hosts a pair of paddle shifters and red "M" drive-mode buttons.

Infotainment.

Every 2020 X5 M has a loaded infotainment system and countless connectivity features. The company's iDrive software is displayed via a 12.3-inch touchscreen. While Apple CarPlay integration and a Harman/Kardon audio system are standard, a Bowers & Wilkins stereo and rear-seat entertainment system are individual options. Android Auto is absent altogether.


2021 Mercedes AMG GLE 63 S (review)

Mercedes-AMG has entered rarified air with its new 603-horsepower GLE 63 S and not counting its fraternal twin GLS 63, there are presently 12 production SUVs that make 600 hp or more. In alphabetical order: Bentley Bentayga (both the 600 hp W12 and 626 hp Speed), the driven-but-as-yet-untested BMW X5 M/X6 M and X5/X6 M Competition, the 707-hp Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk, the 641-hp Lamborghini Urus, the 670-hp Porsche Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid (and Coupe), and the Rolls-Royce Cullinan Black Badge, which squeaks in with 600 horses.

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE is Mercedes' midsize luxury SUV. Mercedes redesigned it last year, and it's earned a top spot ranking because of its high levels of luxury, refinement, and technology. Now Mercedes is expanding the GLE's lineup with the performance-focused AMG GLE 63 S.

This isn't simply a mild enhancement of the GLE. Under the hood is a turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 that pumps out a towering 603 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque. That power is driven through a nine-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel-drive system with a limited-slip differential for the rear axle.

Other German SUVs, mostly. Although the Jaguar F-Pace SVR offers up a token British presence, the serious competition comes from Audi, BMW and Porsche. BMW has its X5 M and X6 M good for up to 617 hp, while Porsche offers the Cayenne and Cayenne Coupe in Turbo and Turbo S E-Hybrid. (The Hybrid is good for 670 hp.) Finally, Audi has a new RS version of its Q8 SUV with 600 hp.

The AMG GLE 63 S interior doesn't visually distinguish itself from the standard GLE.
The premium Nappa leather upholstery is standard — you have to pay extra for it in the standard GLE. An augmented reality layover for navigation directions is also available for the praiseworthy MBUX infotainment system.
