Mariah Carey's "You and I Stevie Wonder" tribute at the BET awards: This is my reaction. This song came out in 1972, on Stevie’s Wonderlove Soul TV Album, written by Stevie himself. I’m loving the bright sound we’re getting, despite all the air, and the MANY runs she is giving. There is tons of air in her sound but she does build a bit and give us moments of a clearer sound, and she uses a lot of vibrato so her moments of straight tone really stand out. I love her melodic choices, many super soulful licks and ideas. This performance is so funny bc it’s so low but still bright! Many people dip into the bottom of their voices and have to lower their larynx and really give some darkness in order to sing in a relaxed setting, but mariah is still bright despite nearing the bottom of her range.
