In 1993, Sega was on top of the gaming world. Just four years later, the company, and its Saturn console, were in dire straits, struggling in a distant third place behind the powerhouse Nintendo 64 and the upstart Sony PlayStation. And yet Sonic the Hedgehog, the very series that had propelled Sega to such unbelievable heights just a generation before, was nowhere to be found. This is the story of the only Sonic game the team that bore his name would ever make for Sega's 32-bit console, and much like the Saturn itself, it's been uncelebrated and under-appreciated ever since.
