Is mulching a waste of time and is the and easier method? Can companion planting do the same job, or is a food forest the answer?

I have been thinking about how food forests work, including ideas like syntropic ago forestry as compared to a more traditional orchard. These are just a few ideas I have been having, rather than anything set in stone. I like the idea of experimenting with plants like comfrey, lavender, sun chokes, legumes to see if they can work well with fruit trees. I also want to grow a kind of backyard orchard or maybe a backyard food forest, but without huge amounts of work.
