The fire devastated over 17,000 hectares throughout Colombia in the last three months, due to the drought caused by El Niño phenomenon. Around twenty hot spots are still active in the country, amid heat records which affect crops and mountain ecosystems. President Gustavo Petro declared a "natural disaster" on Wednesday and asked member countries of the United Nations for help to put out the flames. According to Colombia’s Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies, January could be the hottest month in the last thirty years.
