Text from the Gospel and Homily ~ March 10, 2024

The Lord be with you. And with your spirit.

Proclamation of the holy gospel according to St John. Glory to you, o Lord.

Jesus said to Nicodemus: "Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the son of man be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world that he gave his only son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. For God did not send his son into the world to condemn the world but that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him will not be condemned, but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the only son of God. And this is the verdict, that the light came into the world but people preferred darkness to light, because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come toward the light, so that his works might not be exposed. But whoever lives the truth comes to the light, so that his works may clearly be seen as done in God.”

The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

Have you ever walked into a dark room and felt just a little bit nervous? Even if it's in your own house. You walk into a dark room and you feel just a little bit nervous and some people might even say that they were just a little bit scared. The darkness has a tendency to do that. We don't always know what's in the darkness so we feel a nervousness about approaching it we prefer the light because in the light things can be seen and there is less fear. It doesn't mean that things can't be dangerous even in the light. But if we can see, especially see what's around us we are usually less nervous. But being in the light can be deceiving at times. We may think that everything is just fine because the light is so bright and it can help us. But sometimes because we have been in darkness we can be blinded by the light and we look closely and realize that things are not always as they should be. Our world is very typical of this. When we look back over the years and probably not even years but even just the last few months, things are not always as they should be. Our world has changed. And not necessarily for the better. We have become a people more closely related to the darkness than to the light. Even though we may be in the light of day sometimes even in that light we are not always out of danger. The question is how much do we contribute to that ensuing darkness? Do we do our part to let the light of God show or do we just sit back and take the attitude of "I'm going to mind my own business." we can get used to the darkness. But eventually just like plants that need light without that light they die. And we too can die in the same way. Each and every person must do our part to make the light of God known so that this world can be a better place. Amen.
