Constructed in 1939 and commissioned in 1940, Royal Naval Air Station (RNAS) Yeovilton (ships name: HMS Heron) is the headquarters of the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm.

Yeovilton is home to the best part of 100 aircraft operated on both front-line squadrons and training units, including the Fleet Air Arm Wildcat Force and the Commando Helicopter Force, plus historic aircraft of Navy Wings, part of the Fly Navy Heritage Trust.

The base is located near Yeovil in Somerset and covers around 1,400 acres with the main airfield in Yeovilton itself and the satellite airfield at Ilton (Merryfield). Some 4,300 personnel, Service and civilian, including MOD employees and permanent contractors are employed on the site. The air station also hosts a large support staff from the Defence Equipment and Support organisation, and the world famous Fleet Air Arm Museum.

Since 2013 the British Army Air Corps has also been based at Yeovilton with 1 Regiment, Aviation Reconnaissance Force. This means that all British Wildcat helicopters are home based at Yeovilton.
