The story of The Last of Us video game, edited into a movie. In an apocalyptic world plagued by infection, a smuggler is thrown into an unexpected adventure, tasked with protecting a 14 year old girl as they travel across the country and brave the dangers of this world. This video has been optimized to look best on devices that support HDR playback, has been manually graded to look great on SDR displays. This video also supports 5.1 surround sound with high dynamic range audio, so I recommend watching this on high quality speakers or headphones if you can. This is my favorite game of all time. I really hope you enjoy my movie edit!

If you haven't seen any of my work before, what I try to do is take the story experience of a video game, and cut it into a movie format. Now, because of how much story there is to tell in a game, these movies are often longer than Hollywood movies, but I try to cut the gameplay down to just what's necessary to understand and enjoy the story, while preserving important character moments. Although of course it's impossible to represent everything that's great about a game in a video like this, the idea is just to be a faithful representation of the story itself, in a format that gamres and non gamers alike can enjoy. I've found that even if you've played the game before, watching it back in a more condensed form like this can allow you to notice things about the story you might not have noticed while playing, as things can stay more fresh in your mind because of the shorter runtime, and because elements of the gameplay and exploration aren't distracting you as much as well.

A big part of the process of translating a game into something that feels more like a movie is removing any visual distractions that remind you you're watching a game. Thankfully this game has a bunch of fantastic options that allowed me to disable most of the HUD. What was left over, I used VFX work to remove remaining button prompts, and some audio effects work to remove some audio cues, like those for optional dialogue or directing the player to look in a certain direction. Thankfully, unlike some of my other more recent movies, there wasn't a huge amount of work to do here, as the game does allow me to remove most of these. I believe I have removed 100% of the remaining HUD elements through VFX, so the image should be a clean no HUD experience throughout.

I also try to make sure that the gameplay is as cinematic as possible. I have played this game nearly 20 times in the past, so I was very familiar with where to go and how to act as director and actor when controlling the character and camera, at least when possible. Sometimes when gameplay gets more hectic, there's only so much I'm able to do with this, but I also ran through most sections of this game twice or more to get more options to work with in the edit, and to improve on any imperfections I had in my first recording.

I originally made a movie for this game 10 years ago with the PS3 version, so I was able to reference that for some pretty good ideas on what areas I could cut down on, but I did change some things here and there, and my gameplay is generally a lot better in this version of the movie.

I've named the chapter titles based on the episodes of the TV series that follow those parts of the story:

0:00:00 - When You're Lost in the Darkness
0:31:55 - Infected
0:58:08 - Long, Long Time
1:27:42 - Please Hold to My Hand
2:03:03 - Endure and Survive
2:33:06 - Kin
3:14:02 - When We Are in Need
3:46:20 - Look For the Light

Every supporter gains access to a blog post that I update throughout production of every movie, giving updates for what I did each day, and estimates for things like estimated release date, length of movie, number of VFX required, etc. Supporters at the $5 level or higher will gain access to full quality downloads of every one of my movies, and supporters at the $10 level or higher will be able to download the HDR versions of all of my movies that support that, as well as access to early cuts of the movies weeks or even months before release, while I work on post-production.

If you can't afford to join my Patreon, clicking Super Thanks on one of my videos, or donating via the paypal link on my channel are great options. Youtube Premium also helps a lot and removes ads. Watching more of my videos, liking, commenting, subscribing, and sharing my work are also great ways to help out.

And as always, if you like the movie, please consider supporting the developers and buy the game if you can!
