The 2024 Mazda CX-60 is a critical new model for the Japanese brand in Australia, where it's hoping it can go tyre to tyre with premium Mid-size SUV segment heavyweights, including the well-established BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC. Needless to say, it has a very tall task ahead of it.

That said, the CX-60 uses a similar formula to its rivals, with a new-for-Mazda rear-wheel-drive platform providing the basis for the model. These underpinnings also unlock a trio of new powertrain options, including petrol and diesel turbocharged inline six-cylinder engines, as well as a four-cylinder plug-in hybrid.

In this expert long-term review, CarsGuide Senior Journalist Richard Berry and his family of four spend three months living with the CX-60's diesel-powered D50e GT variant to find out just how well it measures up against its stiff competition.
