Wheel locks are designed to prevent thieves from stealing rims and tires off your car. Wheel locks consist of four special lug nuts and one key. But what to do if you lost or misplaced the lugnuts lock for your car? In this DIY auto repair guide video, young mechanic Aiman will show you steps you can take in order to easily remove the anti-theft key to your car without having to buy special tools designed for this purpose. It doesn't matter what type of cars you have - Honda, Hyundai, Toyota, Nissan, Ford, SUV etc., the method is the same. Just do not use this method to do something illegal like stealing someone else's rims or tires. Yes of course, there are many tools out there such as the Beley Lug Nuts Wheel Lock Removal Kit, Kobalt, Sunex drive spline socket etc., but these sets can be expensive. Removing the wheel locks is actually quite easy. All you need to do is find a 12-point heavy duty socket, preferably one with lifetime warranty that's about the same size of the lugnuts.

Hammer the socket into the lugnut, then use a breaker bar to remove it. Once the lock has been remove, you can use a larger socket to force the key out.

You may need to order replacement key together with a set of new lugnuts. It is not possible to order replacement key which will fit your current lugnuts since these wheel locks usually have about 10 possible combinations. These lug nuts have a specific pattern that only the key that comes with the set can install or remove them.

It's important never to lose the key because you'll need it if you ever get a flat tire. In this video, Aiman's dad lost the key and had a flat tire. The tow truck offered to bring the car back to his shop and remove the wheel lock for a small fee in order to install a spare tire but since his dad has a triple AAA card, the towing back to their house was free.

Other ways to remove the wheel locks are by using grip pliers, blow torch or cutting it with hacksaw or a Dremmel tool. Here are some suggestions or possible solutions from Quora:

You can get a special ‘master’ key that is like a nut key socket but instead of a fixed key it has lots of closely spaced hardened steel pins. The pins are individually sprung so they engage the slots/holes in the security nut to enable you to undo it. Many drive-in tyre shops will have one for customers who have mislaid the correct nut for their car.

You can mold a new one using the nut on the car as the mould - this method guarantees the new key will fit. It can be done with a thermoplastic like Polymorph, it is moldable at over 60 C, so just needs hot water to soften it, push into the nut to engage it and form the key shape, press a square socket drive into the back of the new key and allow it to cool and harden. The plastic when cold is relatively strong, like hard nylon, so will be sufficient for removing the nut, but may not be good for repeated use - you can always re-mould it.

Use epoxy resin to glue a metal bar to the nut. (sideways to give leverage to twist off). Discard nut and bar.

Use a nut splitter to crack the nut off. Discard broken nut.

Lesson learned:

Understood the importance of wheel locks. Always put the wheel locks back in the car.
Have a portable car charger air pump.
Have a flat repair kit .
AAA membership was after all worth it.
Total cost? $175.
