As its name suggests, the tricuspid valve has three separate cusps, or leaflets, and is located between the right atrium and right ventricle of the heart. Its function is to prevent back-flow from the right ventricle to the right atrium during cardiac systole.

The three cusps of the tricuspid valve are the anterior, posterior and septal cusps; these are also known as the anterosuperior, inferior and septal leaflets, respectively, in clinical practice.
