The unit contains an infrared motion sensor. Every time a cat moves in front of the motion sensor, the CATWatch lets out several high-pitched bursts of noise. The noises are beyond the range of human hearing (that's what 'ultrasonic' means) but are very audible to cats, who have far greater sensitivity to sound than we do. The noises act as a shock and irritation to cats, teaching them to associate your garden with the unpleasant noises, and causing them to stay away from your garden in order to avoid the noise.

This low-maintenance method of scaring and deterring cats is completely humane and is also approved by the RSPB as an effective method of protecting birds from cat predation.
