A friend and I took a trip from Canberra (ACT) to Gundagai (NSW) Australia to photograph and film the destruction of the Prince Alfred bridge, a road bridge built in 1867 and torn down 154 years later, in November 2021.

Gundagai was originally built on the flood plains of the mighty Murrumbidgee River. A terrible flood in 1852 killed 72 people and washed the town away. It remained Australia's worst natural disaster until the Black Saturday bush fires of 2009! After this and other floods the town was shifted to higher ground and a bridge was needed to join north and south Gundagai.

The bridge was closed in 1977 with the construction of the modern concrete bridge in use today. Sadly the Prince Alfred has been in a state of disrepair for many decades and by November 2021 in danger of imminent collapse.

Here are some stills and drone footage of the destruction. Goodbye Price Alfred bridge.
