We are in Çarşamba, the fourth largest district of Samsun with a population of 140 thousand, established on the Samsun-Ordu highway, on the 3rd largest plain in Turkey, Çarşamba Plain, spread on both sides of Yeşilırmak, 36 km from the city center.

Transportation is provided only by road. The historical railway line, the foundation of which was laid by Atatürk in 1926, was closed in 1980. In 2013, the line on Çarşamba was unfortunately dismantled.

Yeşilırmak, Turkey's 2nd largest Stream with a length of 416 km, gives life to the plain and Çarşamba.
It arises from the Köse Mountains in Sivas, crosses the Canik Mountains, irrigates the Çarşamba Plain, and flows into the Black Sea from Civa Cape.
Delta lakes have formed in the parts of Yeşilırmak close to the sea.

Yesilirmak divided Wednesday into two. For this reason, city life has always been on two sides. Those living on one side called the other side the "opposite side". It has become an idiom to switch to the "opposite side".

In the beginning, there was only one bridge that allowed passage. Historical wooden bridge 20th century. It was built in the early years, then turned into stone to be more resistant to Yeşilırmak waters. There were such floods that even this bridge was forced, and reinforcements were needed from time to time. Now there are 4 bridges over Yeşilırmak.

The city center is on the east side of the city. Municipality, district governor's buildings, government institutions are on this side. The western part first starts to develop around the train station.

The plain irrigated by Yeşilırmak is extremely suitable for agriculture. Agriculture in the district is developed enough to produce for Turkey. grown products; wheat, barley, paddy, beans, soybeans, chickpeas, sugar beet, sunflower, peach, hazelnut and apple. While Samsun provides 40% of the corn production in Turkey, most of the corn is produced in Çarşamba.

Carsamba is a district with a developed industry based on hazelnuts. There are hazelnut cracking factories that process hazelnuts produced in the region and export them to many countries of the world. The origin of the Wednesday cuisine is "corn" and "pide".
Corn cake, corn soup, keskek, kale soup and wrap, goose tiridi are the most famous dishes of the region. "Wednesday pita" made from wheat flour is also extremely delicious, you should definitely try it.

The Çarşamba region has been a settlement since 4000 BC.
It remained under Hittite and Phrygian domination. According to Greek sources, Scythian Amazons lived on the Çarşamba plain in the 9th century BC, along with Bafra and Terme. Miletos sailors, who established a trade colony in Amisos in 670 BC, extended to the shores of Yeşilırmak and established colonies there.

In the past, there were Sarıcalı neighborhood and Kuşdoğanlı villages in the place of the current district. A big fair was established here in 1370. This fair was called "Wednesday Market" because it was held on Wednesdays. This is where the name Wednesday comes from.

On Wednesday, in the 1700s, a Christian quarter was formed on the west side of Yeşilırmak. After the 1st World War, Osman Ağa, who was appointed by the Ankara government in 1920, destroyed the gangs formed by the Greeks and Armenians in the mountains, partially ensured the security and order in the region, and after that, migration to Çarşamba started for settlement.

There is a story of the folk song Wednesday, Flooded. There lived a poor young man named Ahmet in one of the villages on the banks of Abdal Creek, which joins Yeşilırmak on the Çarşamba Plain. However, after he got engaged to his lover Melek and enlisted in the military, the bad news quickly reached him.

Ağaoğlu Mehmet Ali, who had his eye on Melek, took Melek to the mountain. Moreover, Mehmet Ali had spoken openly to Melek at first, and Melek had harshly rejected him despite the warnings of those around him. When Ahmet gets the bad news, he escapes, gathers his friends with his gun and hits the road.

Day and night, the mountain peak searches for Melek. He's speechless from shouting 'Meleeeek…'. Then one day, a light rain begins.
Then the great sky splits. Yeşilırmak swells to such an extent that the vast Çarşamba Plain turns into a boiling lake. It swallows houses, villages, animals and people.

When everything calms down and the flood subsides, the lifeless bodies of Ahmet and Melek are revealed, holding hands on a rock where Abdal Creek meets Yeşilırmak. According to the rumor, that big rock is divided into seven and a cypress-size water gushes from the bottom of each piece. The people begin to pray, believing that nature sheds its tears. It is believed that these prayers turned into the song "Wednesday Was Flooded" over time.

Nailless Wooden Göğceli Mosque, which has been standing for 816 years. The building, which was built in 1206 during the reign of Anatolian Seljuk Sultan Gıyaseddin Keyhüsrev, was built entirely from wooden material using the masonry technique.
