His video is a great resource. He does a great job at explaining everything, and draws a schematic. So I encourage anyone trying something similar to watch his video as well.

Electro Etching is a cost effective way of personalizing knives and other metal objects. DC current etches the metal, removing mass from the object, leaving a tactile mark in the steel. AC Current marks the object by depositing carbon on the surface of the metal.
