⁉️ Can a wife spend Zakat on her husband and children on their parents?

🔎 The Scholars differ on this issue.

🌟 Allah’s Messenger ﷺ laid great emphasis on Sadaqah and Khairat (charity). When the Muslim women heard him, they wanted to give Sadaqah. Some of the husbands wanted their wives’ Sadaqah as they felt they were more deserving than others:

📚 Narrated Abu Saeed Al-Khudri:
🎙️ On Eid ul Fitr or Eid ul Adha Allah's Messenger ﷺ went out to the Musalla. After finishing the prayer, he delivered the sermon and ordered the people to give Sadaqah.

💬 He said, "O people! Give Sadaqah." Then he went towards the women and said.

🔥"O women! Give Sadaqah, for I have seen that the majority of the dwellers of Hell-Fire were you (women)."

⁉️(The women asked, "O Allah's Messenger ﷺ ! What is the reason for it?"

🗣️ He replied, "O women! You curse frequently, and are ungrateful to your husbands. I have not seen anyone more deficient in intelligence and religion than you. O women! Some of you can lead a cautious wise man astray." Then he left.)

🚪And when he reached his house, Zainab, the wife of Abdullah Ibn Masood, came and asked permission to enter. (It was said, "O Allah's Messenger ﷺ ! It is Zainab."
He asked, “Which Zainab?” The reply was that she was the wife of (Abdullah) Ibn Masood. He said, "Yes, allow her to enter." And she was admitted.)

💍Then she said, "O Prophet of Allah ﷺ ! Today you ordered people to give Sadaqah and I had an ornament and intended to give it as Sadaqah, but Ibn Masood said that he and his children deserved it more than anybody else."

💬 The Prophet ﷺ replied, "Ibn Masood had spoken the truth. Your husband and your children had more right to it than anybody else."
✨(Sahih Bukhari: 1462)

💟 The wife can spend her Zakat and Sadaqah on her husband.

❌ The Zakat given to the husband should not be spent in a way that benefits the wife.

💵 The husband can spend the Zakat (given to him by his wife) in clearing his debts but the wife cannot spend her Zakat to provide benefit to her in any sense.

➤ For example:
🛍️The Zakat (given by the wife to her husband) cannot be spent in household expenditure. The husband can use it for other needs. There is no harm in that.
A group of Scholars agree on this point.

⁉️Can children spend their Zakat on their parents?

Zakat is taken out to purify your earnings. As a respect to your parents, Zakat should not be spent on them.

💫 If you spend your Zakat on your parents, then you would not be able to reap in the rewards (Ajr) of taking care of your parents and doing good (Ehsan) to them.

❎ Zakat should not be spent on your parents.

✅ However, if a daughter is married and her husband has wealth, and her parents are poor and needy, then her husband (their son in law) can spend Zakat on them.

✉️ Their daughter can take the Zakat from her husband and spend it on her parents because this Zakat is from her husband’s wealth, and does not come from her own wealth.

✔️ Spending Zakat from your husband’s wealth on your parents is permissible.

👑 Father has a right over everything that his children own. If a son is wealthy, he should not spend Zakat on his parents because his father has a right over his entire wealth. Rather, he should give it to outsiders.

📝 Some Scholars are of an opinion that if the father has a loan that he cannot pay off, or if his father had been taking care of any orphans and is unable to do so anymore, then the son can spend his Zakat to pay off his father’s loan or to assist him in taking care of the orphans. However, it is better not to use Zakat for your parents.

🌟 Zakat should be given to the poor and the needy. Taking care of your parents, spending on them and doing good (Ihsan) to them has great rewards.

😇 We should try to seek these rewards by spending our wealth on them, instead of using our Zakat and missing out on these rewards.
