A curator at the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History, in Frankfort, Ky., says the long rifle on display in the museum was owned by Kentucky frontiersman Daniel Boone - as clearly "as mud."

"It's very difficult to know if something actually belonged to Boone," she says. But because Boone lived so long ago, and had so few possessions, it's hard to trace an item directly to Boone.

In spite of discrepancies regarding the time the rifle was made and the time of Boone's death in 1820, the long rifle has been known as "Boone's Best Friend."
