There are 44 active forest fires raging across Guatemala. Here is what we know.
On Wednesday, Guatemala’s President Bernardo Arévalo issued a natural disaster declaration amid the forest fires. He said 80% of the fires were started by people. Farmers are known to burn stubble and grass this time of year. However, there is no confirmation that farmers were the culprits. A total of 37 criminal lawsuits have been launched to locate the source of the fires.
Classes were cancelled across three central provinces to minimise students’ exposure to prevailing smoke. The natural disaster declaration frees up funding for firefighting efforts.
