Carmen is a famous opera by the French composer Georges Bizet, based on a novella by Prosper Mérimée. The opera tells the story of the passionate and tragic love affair between the fiery gypsy Carmen and the naive soldier Don José, set in Seville, Spain, in the 19th century.

“L’amour est un oiseau rebelle” (Love is a rebellious bird) is the entrance aria of Carmen, sung by the mezzo-soprano in the first act. It is also known as the Habanera, because of its Cuban rhythm and style. In this aria, Carmen seduces the men around her with her provocative and defiant attitude towards love. She sings that love is a wild bird that no one can tame, and that it is a gypsy child who never follows the rules. She also warns that whoever loves her will suffer, but she doesn’t care.

In this video, Elina Garanca performs “L’amour est un oiseau rebelle” at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 2010. She is accompanied by the conductor Yannick NĂ©zet-SĂ©guin and the orchestra. Garanca is a Latvian mezzo-soprano who has won acclaim for her roles in various operas, especially Carmen. She has a rich and expressive voice, and a charismatic and sensual presence on stage. She delivers a stunning and captivating rendition of the aria, with perfect technique, phrasing, and emotion. She captures the essence and spirit of Carmen, and enchants the audience with her charm and beauty.
