One of the best-known and most commonly sung Christmas songs, Jingle Bells was written by composer James Lord Pierpont (1822–1893) and published under the title “One Horse Open Sleigh” in 1857. Long before the invention of dating apps. a sleigh ride gave an unescorted couple a rare chance to be together, unchaperoned, in distant woods, with all the opportunities that afforded.
