ANNUAL LECTURE IN HONOR OF RICHARD J. CLIFFORD, S.J.
Mercy in the Old Testament: The Fruit of the Womb

The presentation discusses in detail the sometimes overlooked contribution of the Old Testament to a Christian understanding of mercy. Hebrew is not the only ancient language to link mercy to a specific body part ("guts" in Greek and "heart" in Latin), but its connection between "mercy" (raḥamim) and "womb" (reḥem) offers a unique perspective on the gift of mercy we receive from God and are called to share with others.
