The 2024 Abarth 500e represents a seismic shift for Fiat's high-performance spin-off brand. In a sign of the times, the new-generation pocket rocket trades its predecessor's turbo-petrol engine for a single electric motor and a battery pack. Yep, this is an EV hot hatch – and a micro one at that.
The preceding Abarth 595 and 695 were infamous for being loud and brash, so how possibly could a zero-emissions successor fill their proverbial shoes? Well, the Italian marque has it all figured out: you artificially adds its signature sound to the inside and outside of the vehicle. This is an EV that makes noise – and plenty of it.
In this expert review, CarsGuide Contributing Journalist Andrew Chesterton attends the new Abarth 500e's Australian media launch to find out just how well it captures the spirit of its anti-social ancestors. He also discovers whether or not it has its key rival, the Mini Cooper SE, covered.
