Having IBS means emergency trips to the bathroom, embarrassing gas, and a long list of annoying symptoms. But you don't have to suffer needlessly, if you know what not to take and the real cause of IBS. In this video I'll share both.

The conventional approach to dealing with IBS is try and manage symptoms and hope for the best. Sadly, most people only feel marginally better on medications and they still suffer from most of their symptoms. That being said the most harmful medication for IBS is an over the counter medication. Do you know that an acid can do more harm than good and they can affect your stomach acid, which is your first line of defense against pathogens? So often when people are dealing with troublesome symptoms of IBS. They are self medicating with antiacids because they don't know what else to do to make their symptoms better. However, this can make your symptoms worse. Many of my IBS patients have been prescribed Imodium, which helps lessen diarrhea.

Additionally, they have been prescribed medications like bentyl, dicyclomine, and even antidepressants and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. And if they suffer IBS with constipation, they often receive a prescription for Linzess. And here's the thing. Sometimes we need medication and that's not a bad thing. However, there are symptoms associated with IBS that can be managed naturally with certain botanicals and nutritional protocols. More importantly, it's important to determine if a patient is suffering with SIBO small intestinal bacterial overgrowth or IBS or a combination of both.

Although medications are important, it does not necessarily solve the problem is important to assess the whole person not just the symptoms. Many factors play a role from nutrition to vitamins to lifestyle. I love helping patients with IBS.

Depending upon the patient's specific presentation, we often incorporate a five-step protocol with the goal of restoring health to the gastrointestinal tract. The fiber approaches to remove any overgrowth of bacteria replace with enzymes for better digestive support with probiotics repair with gut supporting supplements and food to help the gut mucosa and to rebalance by addressing sleep, stress, exercise and nutrition.
