Cars are made up of numbers and in some cases the numbers mean FAR more than in others, so how about these numbers?
4 Turbo's
294kW
760Nm
R1.5 million rand (or R1.75 million as tested)

All of these numbers are big in any context relating to motoring but the most surprising may be when I state my opinion that this price could just be considered a bargain!

Welcome to the latest generation BMW X5 fitted with the 3L 6 cylinder diesel engine with 4 turbos to give the massive figures quoted above.

As the range topping version the M50d comes standard with an amazing specification level befitting its status and price. But to highlight a few special features I must mention the 4 turbos that activate from zero to high revs so that turbo lag is truly non-existent.

Non-standard active suspension may add R52 000 to the price but introduces active body and roll control so that the large vehicle feels and handles like a small, nimble sports car.

Active cruise control with a level of autonomous driving enables long cruises to be handled with the car steering itself around curves and simply following the road while maintaining a constant gap to the car in front.

A massage function on the front seats ensures comfort and fatigue avoidance while pedestrian avoidance is taken care of by the optional pedestrian detection system. Pedestrians, or animals, at the side of the side of the road trigger a large warning on the dash and Heads up Display.

Another area where the X5 surprised was by sipping diesel at the rate of only 6.8L/ 100km on the long trip from Jozi to the South Coast of Kzn. The return trip did not quite match this figure, but overall consumption after a week's driving was 7.3L/ 100km. Incredible for such a large, luxurious and powerful vehicle.

Special mention must also be made of the upgraded laser headlights fitted to the vehicle. Turning night into day whilst never blinding oncoming traffic.

Overall, the X5, particularly in M50d format, certainly rates as a sublime example of a large SUV and is at it's supreme best on a long holiday trip.
