Having already transplanted Chevrolet’s wicked 427/425 HP engine into small batches of Camaros with a small dedicated crew at his Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, workshops during 1967 and 1968, racing driver and Chevrolet dealer Don Yenko instigated the factory installation of these potent powerplants for 1969. Using Chevrolet’s Central Office Production Order (COPO) system, normally reserved for fleet orders, GM’s 400 CI engine-displacement limit for the Camaro (and midsize Chevelle) was shattered, unleashing one of the quickest and most collectible of all American supercars.

Designated COPO 9561, the 427 engine package for the Camaro also included the new-for-1969 ZL2 Cowl Induction hood, V48 four-core heavy-duty radiator, aluminum intake manifold and bellhousing, heavy-duty springs and 12-bolt Positraction rear axle with heat-treated ring and pinion. Depending upon the source quoted, only an approximate 1,000 COPO 9561 Camaros were produced in all for 1969 and just 58 came with the Z22 Rally Sport option package, which included numerous trim upgrades plus concealed headlights, under-bumper back-up lights, special tail lights and bold “RS” emblems inside and out.

Accompanied by GM of Canada paperwork, this COPO 9561/Z22 Rally Sport 1969 Camaro was delivered new to McDonald Chevrolet Oldsmobile Ltd. in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The COPO 9561 L72 427/425 HP V-8 engine is paired with a Muncie M22 Rock Crusher close-ratio 4-speed manual transmission driving a heavy duty 12-bolt rear end with Positraction. Supporting features include an aluminum intake manifold and bellhousing, Harrison four-core radiator, heavy duty springs, power brakes with front discs, and the ZL2 special ducted hood. Other highlights include bucket seats and a center console with gauges, the Interior Decor package and color-matched steel wheels mounting small-diameter hubcaps and Goodyear F70-14 Polyglas tires.
