In a candid interview, the engineer for the 3.0L Duramax in-line six powering the new 2020 Silverado reveals all the details in the design that he feels is the 'most refined' diesel engine in the half-ton market. Results are in for the new GM 3.0L diesel. This new engine now has the top spot for fuel economy in a half-ton at a staggering 33 mpg hwy, and a solid 23 mpg city. While the numbers go down in a 4x4 to 23/29, they are still way ahead of the competition. In a 4x2 Ford is 22/30 but slips to 20/25 in 4x4. The 2019 EcoDiesel is 20/27 in the 4x2 but we expect the 2020 version to be significantly higher now that Chevy has set the bar so high. Surprisingly, fuel economy in the diesel Silverado is also better than GM's own midsize - the Colorado/Canyon. Truck design has a lot to do with fuel economy numbers so we can't give all the credit to the engine design. GM said they were shooting for the top spot for fuel economy and perhaps it was at the cost of tow capacity where the 2020 GM silverado diesel sits at a max tow of 9300 pounds vs Ford at 11,400 pounds and Ram's 12560 pounds.
