The nail industry underwent a crisis during the pandemic, even more so in California when Governor Gavin Newsom baselessly identified nail salons as the source of COVID-19’s community spread in the state. In 2023, as California's nail industry emerges from the complete shutdowns, its workers — 80% Asian women — still face many prejudices and unfair assumptions that diminish the value of the work and the individuality of the artist.

However, for Tiffanie Tran, Ivy Wu and Mancie Yang, and more than 53,000 nail artists in California, there are countless reasons to stay in the industry and stick with their passion. Through their craft, they brighten up an ordinary week, they make a bride's day more unique, and they listen to and share stories with customers that are strangers or friends.

One nail at a time, these women add sparkles to the world, right from their fingertips.
