One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest by Ken Kesey, narrated by Isaac Birchall
The first part of the book opens early in the Morning with the main character Chief Bromden talking about the Insane Asylum aides. The Aides mock him as they believe that Chief is both Def and Dumb. The key hits the door and the head nurse enter the ward with a chill and walks towards her office where she can observe the patients. Before she can turn into her office, she sees the aides, and advances towards them. The Chief describes her advance as if the Nurse transforms into a great Monster, the size of a Tractor with Growling Jaw, and Long Sectioned Arms; just before she reaches the Aides, she transforms back into her human self before any other patients can see her in her true form. Instead of telling the boys off, she instead instructs them to shave Chief Bromden before the post-breakfast rush. Hiding in the mop closet, Chief tries to remember his childhood, but his fear of being found gives his position away to the Aides and they drag him away to the tub room. They aggressively shave him, and the vibrating noise takes the Chief back to the War with a sound like Air Raids, and he starts to get foggy as the PTSD panic overtakes him. He reflects on his time in the hospital and reassures the audience that what the book entails is the truth « even if it didn’t happen. »
