I start taking apart (and breaking) things in attempt to modify my super rare camera. Now that I say that out loud, it sounds crazy. But it should work. I think. This is my Mamiya ZD, a CCD medium format DSLR from 2006. My idea is to buy an extra removable filter cartridge and remove the IR cut filter from it, leaving an empty shell. That empty shell should trick the camera into thinking that a filter is in place and allow me to take pictures in infrared. When I want to go back to photographing normally, I can swap back in my IR cut filter and go between the two in a few seconds. That's the idea at least.

My next step will be to maybe find an IR pass filter (just glass) about the same thickness that I can place back inside the cartridge. That would be ideal to still protect the sensor from dust, and also help the camera's focusing system.
