Nissan has introduced the Nissan Ariya, an electric crossover that has a range 482 kilometres or 300 miles per charge for the long range, FWD model. Ariya, is a part of Nissan’s plan to roll out 10 new models in 20 months. Nissan expects sales of EVs and e-POWER electrified models to be more than 1-million units a year by the end of 2023. Ariya is scheduled to go on sale in Japan in mid-2021, followed by the U.S. and Canada later that year. Buyers will be able to choose from multiple configurations to meet their individual needs. These include two-wheel-drive and new “e-4ORCE” all-wheel drive versions, as well as two different battery sizes. The e-force system uses a twin electric motors. The battery sizes are 63 kWh battery or 87 kWh. The smaller battery will be less expensive and have a 200 mile range or 321km. The larger battery will have 300 miles or 482km. torque will range from 221lb.-ft to 443lb.-ft. The Ariya looks modern and futuristic but still has the familiar SUV shape and functionality that people demand. As a reference this new model is roughly the same size, both overall length and wheelbase as the current Rouge utility. The front shield design incorporates a 3-D traditional Japanese pattern just under the smooth surface, while protecting sensing equipment, the lower section of the shield is bordered by subtle lighting that illuminates, along with the logo, when the Ariya is ready to drive. Thin LED headlamps, constructed with four 20-millimetre mini-projectors help define the V-motion design. The one-piece light blade along the back holds the rear combination lamps and has a blackout effect when parked, and a consistent red illumination, day or night. This new EV is a joint venture of the Nissan Renault and Mitsubishi alliance. The inside you see here is obviously a RHD Japanese model, but having a look at the materials, it hasNissan grade seat and steering wheel materials but the way the wood grain accents have the touch-sensitive buttons intergraded into the dash and the centre console is a fist. The dash is devoid of buttons and switches, the primary climate control functions are integrated into the wooden centre dash and are capacitive, with haptic switches. Nissan claims they offer the same feeling as mechanical switches by vibrating when touched. The dual-panel dash and infotainment screen look similar in design to the latest Mercedes MBUX design. These screens are 12.3-inches each and just like Mercedes these have gesture controls to swipe though functions. The benefits of an electric platform is an almost flat floor and cab forward design allowing for maximum interior space for both legroom and floor space. The front section has an open concept to really stretch out. So, finally Nissan has an electric SUV to build off the success of the LEAF. This is the size and shape that people want to drive and now it is going to available next year. What do you think, do you like the look or is it a bit too restrained in design.
