Existing buildings make more money, they are more sustainable, and they make happier users. Kevin discusses his experience as a Silicon Valley developer. Kevin graduated from Stanford University and has 36 years of experience in commercial real estate, and has owned SHARP Development for the past 25 years. He handles all aspects of the development process and has completed more than 50 buildings totaling over 2.5 million square feet of space. Over the past 6 years Kevin has concentrated on retrofitting older buildings to be carbon neutral, have a net zero energy bill as well as a strong emphasis on the health and wellness of the interior environment. The driver for Kevin is to demonstrate that this way of repurposing existing building stock can be done in a manner that is measurably more profitable for the ownership than the less expensive way of building to meet minimum code. He has successfully completed six buildings of this nature in Silicon Valley. Kevin’s net zero energy buildings have won multiple awards, including the 2017 ASHRAE Award for “The Most Innovative Sustainable Building of the Year in the United States”. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
