Today we are operating a very large 6000 watt fiber laser. A fiber laser delivers the optical laser through a fiber optic cable which is different than a CO2 laser that generally uses mirrors to transmit the laser beam. The steel that we are cutting today is 20 gauge stainless steel sheet metal and we are using about 5500 watts of power and a very fast feed rate. This part is also etched in addition to being cut. This laser cutter is at E.H. Schwab in Turtle Creek, Pennsylvania. The laser cutter is made by Bystronic and is part of the Bysmart Fiber series of laser cutters. A typical laser cutter is usually in the 50-100w range, making this laser about 100x larger than a typical laser cutter for cutting plastics or wood. This laser cutter is especially good for cutting reflective metals. The fiber laser can cut stainless steel, aluminum, brass, copper, inconel, and just about any metal that you throw at it. The maximum thickness for metals like stainless steel is around 1.125 inches which requires a substantially slower feed rate than we are using.
