The Sacred Band was established around 378 BCE by the Theban statesman Gorgidas. Unlike typical Greek military formations, which were often composed of soldiers grouped by age or geographical origin, the Sacred Band was distinctively organized based on companionship and mutual affection. Comprising 150 pairs of male lovers, chosen for their devotion to one another and their martial abilities, the Sacred Band epitomized the ideals of camaraderie and unity in ancient Greek culture.
