How can we increase the throughput of NC without sacrificing security?

NC has a natural throughput limit. For NC, there are two things you can do if you want to raise the throughput: the first is you can increase the block size; the second thing is you can lower the block interval.

However, doing either will increase the orphan rate, and as your orphan rate increases, the system's security goes down, and throughput goes down.

Nervos researcher Ren Zhang identified two areas of improvement for NC:
1. The “Manual” throughput limit.
2. An incentive issue, the selfish mining attack.
