We sat down with Renée Elliot, founder of Planet Organic and the initiative for women, Beluga Bean to find out more about her inspiring story. In this episode, Renée discusses how she went from being a self proclaimed small-town American girl to a passionate and determined young woman who wanted to help and improve the world we live in.

Having immigrated from the US to the UK after falling for a man she met on a London night bus, Renée recalls her first day working at a publishing house where she was faced with a co-worker who glumly expressed his desire for it to be ‘Friday already’. It was from that point onwards that she knew ‘she had to pursue something she loved’.

“determination and grit win every time”

After marrying the man she met on the night bus, she began working for Wild Oats, the largest health food store in the country. It was the first time in her life that ‘she knew she was in the right place doing the right thing’ and from then on excellent food, optimum nutrition and sustainable agriculture became her mission. After feeling inspired by her work and after a few visits to Bread & Circus in Boston, she took the leap of faith to set up her own business — Planet Organic.

Renée saw Planet Organic as a more female business that embraced its people, had values and had fun. Her mission was — and still is — to promote health in the community. However, owning her own business didn’t come without its own challenges, she describes it as a rollercoaster and one which required a lot of resilience. The best bit of advice she was ever given was from her father who told her that, “there was no reason that she couldn’t do what anyone else could do’ and that “determination and grit win every time”.

After eventually taking a step back from her role at Planet Organic, she went on to launch Beluga Bean, a business and life skills academy which provides women with the support they need to lead a thoughtful, abundant and vibrant life and addresses important female issues such as pregnancy and juggling work with kids.

A warning to listeners: there’s something incredibly infectious about Elliott’s unshakeable positivity and her desire to make things better.
