Computer Science Is Not Software Engineering.

A lot of students who go into Computer Science programs go in with the wrong expectations. After consuming popular media, they’re convinced that Computer Science degrees will turn them into magical computer wizards who can build anything, and all they have to do is attend classes.

This is not the case, and let’s talk about why.

What’s the difference between them? In my experience as a Computer Science major, you talk about a lot of stuff that isn’t directly related to Software Engineering. In your degree, you’ll take a bunch of math classes, you’ll take a lot of theoretical algorithms and data structures classes, maybe a few system architecture classes, and a whole lot of other stuff like machine learning classes, networking classes; you get the point. You’ll also probably take a software engineering class or two, but that likely won’t be the majority of your degree.

Software engineering, on the other hand, focuses a lot more on the practical parts of building software, crazy, I know. This would involve learning design patterns, relevant tech stacks, and a bunch of other things.
