What are antioxidants? This group of compounds protect the skin against free radicals caused by UV & environmental pollutants. They work by taking up free electrons, in turn protecting cell membrane & function

Foods rich in antioxidants. Dietary needs of antioxidants are met with a balanced diet. Foods high in antioxidants include; dark chocolate, nuts, esp pecan nuts, fruits: oranges, beans, kale, spinach, cabbage, berries, blueberries, strawberries, goji,raspberries
.
What do antioxidants do for skin? Apart from normal cell function, antioxidants work by-
.
1. Protecting dermal collagen & elastic fibers, hence the role in antiaging
.
2. Reduce potential skin cancer (niacinamide studies) reduce solar keratosis rate 23 to 40%.

3. Pigmentation treatments, namely to reduce oxidative stress & possibly reduce pigment via blue + HEV light
.
4. Reduce inflammation & oxidative stress;acne (free fatty acids) rosacea Vitiligo, psoriasis, lupus

How to start skin care? The mainstream antioxidants include

Vitamin C or ascorbic acid. 10-20 % L ascorbic stand alone or combined with vitamin E, ferulic acids

Vitamin E: Tocopherol is ideal for those with sensitive skin. The most cost effective antioxidant

Ferulic acid: this has synergistic effects with vitamin C
.
Silimarin: derived from milk thistle, this antioxidant can help with acne & reduce the incidence of post acne marks

Resveratrol via grapes, berries. Studies have shown that resveratrol can reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer and neurodegeneration. Resveratrol to activates the sirtuin genes which protect our DNA

CoQ10, niacinamide
