CBS is currently (finally!) remastering all seven seasons of the original MacGyver in HD ... and it's looking good! Here's a first glance teaser from their press release that includes a comparison between the old SD and the new remastered HD transfers. The video itself is not in HD, but you can already see the huge improvement in the details. (As a reminder, MacGyver was mastered on video tape, so remastering it is a lot more work than with other shows that have been mastered on film. Everything has to be scanned from the original footage, re-cut and all visual effects have to be digitally recreated. That's why they're using the somewhat more ugly new logo from the DVD boxes instead of the original one from the old opening credits.)

At the moment, this info is just for business partners, i.e. tv channels, so there's no word on whether the new transfer will be available on Blu-ray or just for streaming/downloading and when exactly.

The Original MACGYVER - HD Remastered!

The original MACGYVER (1985-1992) was a ratings success and gained a loyal following around the world. “To MacGyver” is now a verb in the official Oxford English Dictionary. Its definition is to “Make or repair (an object) in an improvised or inventive way, making use of whatever items are at hand.”

Luckily for the fans, CBS decided "to MacGyver" the original series from SD to HD! Seasons 1-3 of the original MACGYVER are now remastered in HD and all 7 seasons are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2018.
