Carbonation decreases the pH of the concrete pore solution. This can cause the reinforcing bars within concrete to corrode and crack the cover of the concrete. It can also cause calcium hydroxide particles to dissolve, leading to an increase in the porosity and permeability of the concrete. This video explains the process of carbonation and outlines methods to delay carbonation in concrete structures.
