Like every year, I can't help but upload a video entirely dedicated to this fantastic rally car. This one is from the 2021 and 2022 Bernina Gran Turismo historic hillclimb in Switzerland during which I managed to record three different Stratos Group 4 cars, one fitted with a 6-in-1 exhaust, giving her a more high-pitched tone, and the other two with the typical 3-1/3-1 layout making the iconic V6 echoing through the mountains.

Bernina Gran Turismo is an event born in 2014 with the aim of keep the memory of the legendary Bernina hillclimb race of 1929 and 1930 alive. It's held on the beautiful Bernina Pass in Switzerland, on a section of the original route specifically closed to traffic, with the hilclimb course starting from La Rösa (1,871 m above sea level) and ending up on the actual Bernina Pass (2,328 m) after a total of 5.9 km. Back to those years this competition was part of the International St. Moritz Automobile Week, which consisted of a rally, the kilometer race, a skill race, a concours d'elegance and, as a conclusion, the hillclimb race. Since 2021 BGT's organizers decided to celebrate the whole International St. Moritz Automobile Week of those two years with a selection of events which recalled the original ones.

Lancia unveiled the Stratos HF prototype at the 1971 Turin Motor Show, a year after the announcement of the Stratos Zero concept car. That car was powered by a mid-mounted Dino Ferrari V6 engine producing 192 hp and was officially sold as Stratos HF Stradale. Lancia undertook extensive testing with the Stratos and raced the car in several racing events where Group 5 prototypes were allowed during the 1972 and 1973 seasons.The production of the 500 cars required for homologation in Group 4 started in 1973 and it was finally homologated to race in the 1974 World Rally championship.

The Stratos rally and race cars were moved by the same Ferrari V6 engine of the Stradale but with a bit more power. It was around 275 hp for the original 12 valve version and 320 hp for the 24 valve version. Beginning with the 1978 season the 24 valve heads were banned from group 4 competition by a change to the FIA rules (which would have required additional production of 24-valve cars for re-homologation). The Stratos Gr. 4 weighed between 900 and 950 kilograms, depending on configuration. Only 50 Stratos rally cars were built and it won the 1974, 1975 and 1976 championship titles in the hands of Sandro Munari and Björn Waldegård.
