This guy, James Powell, (probably not his real name) wanted to hire me to do an epoxy garage floor coating in a house he had just purchased. He contacted me via text and said he lived in Idaho but had just bought a house in Portland, Me. He wanted the garage floor epoxied before he moved there in 30 days. I gave him a quote, he accepted, and said he'd send me a deposit check for 50%. Then he said he still owed the previous owner some money so he would include that amount in the check also. He didn't tell me how much that would be. He wanted me to deposit the check when I got it then pull out the extra and send it to the previous owner.
Before it got that far, I did a little investigating. For one, the person who's cell number he was using had another person's name on it. That person could see my texts but not his. She said he had been using her cell number to scam a lot of other contractors using her cell number but didn't know how he was doing it. She did say he had hacked her Facebook page.
After talking with her I called the realtor of the home he said he had purchased in Portland, Me. The realtor said he had never heard of this guy.
By now I new it was a scam for sure but I let him send me the check. When the check arrived I called the company name on the check. It was a business from California. They seemed legit and when I explained what was going on, they said their bank account had been compromised and had shut down that account. I took the check to my local Police dept. and they said it's a scam and they would deal with it from here.
