Notably, he served as the 74th mayor of Detroit, Michigan from 2009 to 2014, representing the Democratic Party. Following his standout college career at Syracuse University, Bing embarked on a successful 12-season tenure in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a point guard for teams such as the Detroit Pistons, Washington Bullets, and Boston Celtics. Throughout his NBA journey, he maintained impressive statistics, averaging over 20 points and six assists per game. Bing's exceptional performance earned him recognition with seven NBA All-Star Game appearances, including the prestigious Most Valuable Player award in 1976. The Detroit Pistons honored his contributions to the sport by retiring his jersey number, and he further cemented his legacy by being inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Bing's victory in the primary led to his inauguration as mayor in May 2009, and he later secured re-election to a full term. However, challenges arose during his tenure, including a reduction in power due to Detroit's emergency management, health issues, and declining approval ratings. Consequently, Bing opted not to seek re-election in 2013, paving the way for Mike Duggan to succeed him.
