Volkswagen is making a significant stride into the electric sports car arena with the unveiling of the ID. GTI Concept at the IAA Mobility event in Munich. This futuristic model inherits its DNA from the previously iconic GTI lineup, such as the Golf GTI and Polo GTI, but brings it into the era of electric mobility. Based on the ID. 2all concept, which garnered attention earlier for being a future electric compact car with an affordable price tag, the ID. GTI Concept is set to redefine the GTI experience.

The electric sports car introduces a front-axle differential lock, controlled electronically by a Vehicle Dynamics Manager, reminiscent of the traditional GTI models. This technology, previously featured in the turbocharged Golf GTI, is making its electric debut in the ID. GTI Concept, showcasing Volkswagen's commitment to blending the heritage of GTI with cutting-edge electric drivetrain capabilities.

One of the most intriguing aspects is the GTI Experience Control, which provides drivers with the ability to customize various aspects of the vehicle's performance, including the drive system, running gear, steering, sound, and even simulated shift points. This innovation allows drivers to choose from different GTI profiles, reminiscent of historic models like the original 1976 Golf GTI or the 2001 Golf GTI Mark 4 '25 years of GTI.' It essentially transforms the ID. GTI Concept into a dynamic time machine, offering a glimpse into the rich history of GTI evolution.

The exterior design maintains GTI's distinctive features, such as the red radiator grille surround and a motorsport-inspired bumper. The concept vehicle sits on 20-inch aluminum alloy wheels with 245/35 performance tires, emphasizing its powerful proportions and dynamic stance. The C-pillar and side profile contribute to a visually striking appearance, showcasing Volkswagen's expertise in creating vehicles with clear and powerful proportions.

Moving to the interior, the ID. GTI Concept continues the legacy of the first GTI by incorporating modern elements. The three-spoke steering wheel with a distinctive airbag design pays homage to the original GTI. The GTI Experience Control, located in the center console, adopts the iconic golf ball shifter design and serves as a hub for controlling different driving profiles.

In terms of digital features, the ID. GTI Concept boasts a 12.9-inch infotainment touch display and an augmented reality head-up display that projects data onto the windshield for both the driver and the passenger. The customizable cockpit looks, including a Vintage mode that emulates the instrumentation of earlier GTI models, add a touch of nostalgia to the futuristic interior.

The electric drivetrain, high-performance chassis, and intelligent driving dynamics systems underscore Volkswagen's commitment to creating an electrified GTI that retains the brand's legacy of driving pleasure and everyday usability. With production plans already confirmed as part of Volkswagen's broader electrification strategy, the ID. GTI Concept represents a bold step into the electric future while staying true to the spirit of the iconic GTI brand.
