An MRI scan is supposed to be routine and is a very safe medical procedure.

But that doesn’t mean it isn’t a scary thought to have one – it’s a large, noisy machine and you’re in an enclosed space. That combination plus the fact that you’re not in control of what’s happening doesn’t help matters.

So how can you stay calm when the MRI scan is taking place?

Check before your appointment if the MRI scanner has the option to play you music – most of them do. And most places will allow you to bring your own music if you ask them. Choose tracks that you find relaxing and can chill out to. And make sure you’ve got enough of them to more than fill the likely length of the session.

Check whether you can bring a friend to be in the room while you have your scan. Again, most places will allow this subject to all the usual rules, the approval of the technician carrying out the scan and leaving anything magnetic or affected by strong magnets well out of the way.

Deep breathing can also help. Practice your breathing technique before you’re in the MRI scanner itself so that it’s second nature to you. You don’t want to be worrying about whether you’re breathing right as well. Long, slow, deep breaths are good. If it’s comfortable, hold the breath for a second or two but only if it’s comfortable. Then a long, slow, deep breath out again. Nothing too strenuous, so you don’t have to puff your lungs out or anything like that.

Some people find a sleeping mask works well – they’re cheap to buy (or you could just improvise with a scarf if you don’t want to splash out any money on something you may never use again) and help you to get over any anxiety about being inside a big machine.

If you’ve practiced mindfulness or any similar form of relaxation that can be good as well. Depending on how far away your appointment is, you might have time to get up to speed with this.

Another option is hypnosis – it’s very good at calming down fears.

There’s a track linked below this video that’s been specially written to help you overcome your worries about having an MRI scan and, because it’s a download, it’s available instantly.

The track lasts just under half an hour which means you could probably play it while you’re in the machine itself – I’m sure the technician would agree if it helped keep you calm.
