Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway), who is returning to Genovia with her bodyguard Joe (Héctor Elizondo) and cherished cat Fat Louie, has recently graduated from Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School, five years after the events of the previous movie. When her grandmother, Queen Clarisse (Julie Andrews), abdicates her throne, she will be ready to take over. Mia dances with all the available guys at her 21st birthday celebration in the hopes of meeting a husband.
She finds herself drawn to Nicholas, a dapper young guy played by Chris Pine. As the evening wears on, Mia's tiara comes off and is discovered by Viscount Mabrey (John Rhys-Davies), a member of Parliament, who is plotting to steal Mia's crown. The following morning, as the Parliament is in session, Mia discovers a secret chamber where she can listen in covertly.
The Viscount Mabrey discloses that Lord Devereaux, his nephew, is an additional heir to the Genovian throne. The only way Mia can take on the role of Queen despite Queen Clarisse's disapproval is if she gets married this month. Mia is taken aback to learn that Lord Devereaux is actually Nicholas, but Clarisse extends an invitation for him to stay at the palace. Mia is surprised by an unexpected visit from her best friend Lilly Moscovitz (Heather Matarazzo). They go through possible husbands together
