The Audi Q3 Sportback aims to blend SUV practicality with coupe-like styling, but does it hit the mark? We've spent some time with Audi's fashionable high-rider to find out.

From the front, there's little to distinguish the Q3 Sportback from the regular Q3, with its huge grille, angular intakes, and intricate LED headlights all present and correct. However, peek around the back and you'll spot sharper creases along the doors and a heavily raked roofline that tapers towards the rear, giving the Sportback a sleeker, sportier profile.

While undoubtedly more eye-catching than the somewhat frumpy standard Q3, the Sportback's coupe-inspired silhouette comes at the expense of practicality. Rear headroom is noticeably tighter due to that sloping roofline, making the back seats feel rather cramped - especially for taller occupants. Thankfully, the boot remains as generously sized as the regular Q3's at 530 litres.

The interior is pure Audi, which means a restrained but premium-feeling design with a focus on clean lines and impeccable material quality. The 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system is slick and intuitive, while the available digital instrument cluster keeps things looking suitably modern.

Under the skin, the Q3 Sportback utilises the same range of punchy turbocharged petrol and diesel engines as its more practical sibling. Performance is more than adequate across the board, though the 1.5-litre TFSI petrol and 2.0 TDI diesel hit the sweet spot for most buyers, offering enough shove without compromising too heavily on efficiency.

On the road, the Sportback exhibits typical Audi composure. The ride is generally pliant, though models specced with larger wheels and sports suspension can become fidgety over rougher surfaces. Keen drivers may also lament the Q3's lack of outright dynamism - this stylish crossover is more about relaxed cruising than all-out thrills.

So while the Q3 Sportback undoubtedly turns heads with its racy roofline, it's not quite as practical as the standard Q3. If interior space and versatility are priorities, the more conventionally styled variant makes more sense. But for those who can make the compromise, the sleek Sportback certainly looks the business.
